Gerald "Gerry" Wood
Gerald Wood is currently a freelance musician and private instructor throughout the DFW area, in addition to being a frequent utility player for the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphonies. In the Fall of 2011 he was appointed as Adjunct Instructor of Horn at the University of Texas at Arlingon.
He has completed his course work for a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Horn performance at the University of Illinois under the direction of Dr. Kazimierz Machala. He has also completed a Masters of Music Performance at the University of Southern Mississippi and received a Bachelors of Music Education at Stephen F. Austin State University. In the fall of 2003 he spent time in Winterthur, Switzerland studying at the Musik Hochschule, Zürich with David Johnson of the American Horn Quartet.
Mr. Wood’s playing experience runs the gamut of performance ensembles, both large and small. He has marched with The Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps, played in numerous university ensembles and regional orchestras and played in many nationally renowned chamber ensembles, including the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. He is currently freelancing in the DFW area with engagements with the Dallas Opera, the Lyric Stage Orchestra of Irving, the Dallas Wind Symphony, Plano Symphony Orchestra, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and many more.
In addition, he has been a member of the Four Hornsmen of the Apocalypse Horn Quartet since the fall of 1998. Mr. Wood has won numerous first place solo honors including the concerto competition held at the 21st annual Southeast Horn Workshop, the Drum Corps International Individual and Ensemble Competition, the 2001 Midwest Horn workshop, the University of Illinois School of Music Concerto Competition and most recently Grand Prize at the International Women in Brass Conference, in addition to being a finalist in seven major symphony auditions.
A strong supporter of music education, Mr. Wood has taught horn privately, for over fifteen years, to all ages, including five years at the university level. He is husband to Molly and father to Seth, Sam and Lydia and currently resides in Colleyville, Texas.
